Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) was founded on December 1, 1973 as Garhwal University, born out of a grassroots movement for accessible higher education in Uttarakhand. Renamed in 1989 to honour Shri Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna, and upgraded to a Central University, in 2009, it has grown into a premier national institution.The University runs 51 departments under 11 schools, offering 14 UG, 59 PG, 2 Integrated, 4 PG Diploma, 4 Diploma programmes, and Ph.D. in 48 disciplines in regular mode. It also offers region-specific courses addressing Himalayan socioeconomic and ecological needs.
